Wye
WyeWye is a large village lying about 1.5 miles east of the main Ashford - Canterbury Road. There have been settlements at Wye from pre-historic times. The old bridge, dating from 1638, is at the point where the Old Downs Way crossed the River Stour and where the modern North Downs Way enters the village. The buildings of Wye College date from 1447 and are open to the public upon application to the Estates Bursar. Imperial College Wye is a centre for teaching and research and its interests extend beyond agriculture and horticulture to include countryside management and the study of scientific economic and environmental matters. The parish church was rebuilt in 1447 by John Kempe, a local man, who became Bishop of Rochester, Chichester and London successively, then Archbishop of York and finally Archbishop of Canterbury and Chancellor of England. Wye is surrounded by beautiful and interesting countryside and is the ideal base from which walkers can explore the North Downs. An unusual feature well worth seeing is the Wye Crown carved into the side of the Downs by Wye College students in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII. Visitors to Wye will find a wide range of holiday accommodation.

Hinxhill is a small farming community situated close to Wye. There are some very pleasant walks on the numerous footpaths and the church, whose register dates back to 1577, is worth a visit. In the lane leading to Goodcheap Farm there is a very old oak surrounded by an iron fence and this tree is said be mentioned in the Domesday Book.
