Internal Audit is established by the council to undertake a wide range of independent reviews of its systems and operations. The aim of these reviews is to help ensure that the council achieves its objectives and to provide assurance that it manages its risks efficiently and effectively.

Internal Audit critically evaluates the council’s internal control framework and, where necessary, makes recommendations for improvement and the introduction of best practice throughout the organisation.  Internal Audit is a statutory service and is required to operate in accordance with the Code of Practice for Internal Audit in Local Government.

Since September 2005, the internal audit service has been provided through a partnership with Maidstone Borough Council. The partnership has provided a great opportunity to share best practice and make use of audit skills and experience.
