Housing Benefit Overpayments

What happens if I have been overpaid Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Benefit?

We have drawn up a policy to deal with the administration and recovery of overpayments.

Council's Coroporate Debt Recovery Policy (146 KB) PDF

How will the overpayment be recovered?

There are various ways in which an overpayment can be recovered, all of which are covered in detail in section 7 of the policy document above.

This Council will vigorously pursue all Housing Benefit Overpayments due to it which may include the attachment to on-going benefits, the employment of Bailiffs or the use of legal ation that may involve obtaining a County Court Judgement (CCJ).

If you have received an invoice for the overpayment, we have a facility for you to make an online payment using a debit card or credit card (there is a 1.5% charge for paying by credit card).

Can I get some further information and/or advice?
