Animal Boarding Accommodation
All accommodation should be built on a concrete base with a damp
proof course to building regulation standard.
All exterior woodwork should be tanalised or cuprinated but do
not use any toxic substances such as asphenol.
The interior of all accommodation must be insulated to prevent
both heat loss and noise escape, and lined with an impervious
material eg coated hardboard, laconite or similar materials to
provide an easy clean surface and help prevent a build up of
parasites.
All dog compartments should be at least 1.85 metres (six
ft) high with a floor area 3.1 sq metres (12 sq ft) per dog.
Cats walk in ‘chalet’ style should be 1.85 metres high with a floor
area of 0.84 sq metres (9 sq ft) (1 cat), 1.5 sq metres (16 sq ft)
(2 cats) or 1.9 sq metres (20 sq ft) (3 cats). Cats Penthouse
style should be at least 1.22 metres high (4 ft) with floor areas
as for chalet style. Large animals may need more room.
All units should open on to a rear or central passageway for
maintenance or emergency purposes.
All exercise runs must be paved to allow easy cleaning and
disinfection. Dog runs should be at least 2.2 sq metres (24
sq ft) and should have solid partitions between the runs to help
prevent noise. Cat runs should be at least 1.7 sq metres (18
sq ft). Communal cat runs should not be allowed. Dogs
may have access to a larger run or paddock of at least 37 sq metres
(400 sq ft). The perimeter and entrance should be paved or
surfaced with a suitable material to prevent the ground from
becoming unduly trodden or fouled.
Drainage for washing down the kennels and runs should preferably
be via a closed drain which terminates in a holding tank of
suitable capacity. This may then overflow via a soakaway if
the soil type permits. You will probably need to put
landscaping around the kennel units to protect your neighbours from
noise and to preserve their views.
