Cockerel Noise
It’s a popular misconception that the countryside is peaceful
and quiet. In some ways it can be noisier than towns.
If you’ve moved to the country be tolerant of country noises they
are part of its charm.
With the increase in the number of people moving out of towns
and cities for a life in the country, cockerel complaints are on
the increase.
Advice to Complainants
It is best to speak to your neighbour about the problem in
a friendly way first. If the situation doesn’t improve

What an Owner can do about a Problem Cockerel:
Cockerels tend to crow from first light.
- if they are put into a hen house at night and they can’t see
the dawn
- letting them out later in the morning can reduce
complaints
- try putting a shelf in to allow the cockerel to walk
around at normal height but prevents it stretching its neck to make
the crowing sound
Keeping a number of different cockerels on the same land can
cause problems giving little let up in the noise for
neighbours.
- Consideration should be made for separate hen houses for each
breed.
- When closed in at night, smaller cockerels and chickens have a
lower ceiling height in their house than the bigger breeds to
prevent crowing
Remember
Chicken owners should remember that not everyone likes chickens
and cockerels going into their gardens. Keep them within the
boundary of your own land.
