Green Waste

Whilst we provide a green waste collection service to a number of properties in the urban areas of Ashford and Tenterden, it is a far more environmentally friendly option for you to compost your own waste and use it in your garden.

Home Composting

You can produce your own compost by using organic kitchen waste and waste from the garden.

Residents can obtain home composters at greatly reduced prices by visiting the Kent County Council website by telephoning the Waste Promotions Officer on 01622 605868, by visiting the Recycle Now website or by telephoning 0845 077 0757.

To find out how to make compost at home, visit the Recycle Now Home Composting website.

Green Waste Collection Service

Our green waste collection service runs from March until November each year. Leafets detailing the service are delivered to the properties within the scheme informing the household of what is collected and when. (You must not put organic kitchen waste into the bags for Green Waste Collection, because of the risk of spreading Foot and Mouth Disease).

In areas where the green waste service operates, garden waste will not be collected as part of the normal refuse.  On the days when green waste is collected it must be left out with your normal refuse - the sacks containing normal waste should be tied, whilst the sacks containing green garden waste should be left open so the collectors  can identity the different wastes and check the contents.

The collectors cannot empty the poly bags used to deliver sand and ballast, as they are too heavy to lift to the back of the vehicle, so please ensure you use black dustbin sacks or 25kg bags that building or garden materials come in.

Disposing of Green Waste

If you do not receive our Green Waste Collection service, there are other ways you can dispose of your green waste.

Both the Kent County Council and the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) can give advice on home composting.
