Hearing Clinics
Hi Kent is the county’s deaf and hard of hearing registered
charity. Established in 1986, they cover the whole of the
county and in 2007 were the only Kent voluntary organisation to win
the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
Hi Kent carry out in-home assessments of need for people
over 65 years on behalf of Kent County Council, and provide
assistive equipment within approved criteria.
They have a huge network of more than 200 volunteer-staffed
hearing aid aftercare clinics in towns and villages throughout
Kent. At these clinics, they clean, re-tube and provide and
fit replacement batteries for hearing aids, all free of
charge.
They also recruit and train volunteers, many of whom are
themselves deaf, to run the clinics and run Deaf Awareness
training courses, teach British Sign Language at weekends, and run
free Lipreading classes.
In addition Hi Kent sell assistive equipment for deaf and
hard of hearing people, including special telephones, domestic and
commercial loop systems, special smoke alarms, doorbells that work
with flashing lights to alert users, conversation aids and TV
listening aids. All these items can make a huge difference to the
daily life of a person with hearing loss.
They are particularly active in the Ashford area and run
