What is a Designated Public Places Order?

Asbo Clinic LaunchedThe Criminal Justice and Police Act (2001) introduced new powers for Local Authorities to designate certain public areas where nuisance or disorder has occurred that can be linked with the consumption of alcohol.

In areas where a Designated Public Places Order is in place, the Police have the power to confiscate alcohol from people that are behaving in an anti-social way.

If a person continues to drink in public when asked not to do so, the Police can arrest them and they may be fined up to £500 if convicted.

The Police also have the power to arrest people who fail to surrender alcohol when asked to do so.
