Designated Public Places Order
Consultation

The Council has been seeking the views of key
local groups over a proposal from Kent Police to introduce a
Designated Public Places Order forAshford Town Centre, North and
Victoria Parks, the area around the Stour Centre, the Railway
Station, Victoria Road, South Stour Avenue, Queen Mother’s Park and
Bowens Field Wetlands.
Following feedback from the respondents a
revised proposal was put before the Council in April 2009 for
approval and we are now asking members of the public for their
views and evidence before deciding whether an order will be granted
and the area it may cover.
Kent Police submitted the request
to the Council in 2008 to introduce a Public Places Order, using
legislation set out under the Criminal Justice and Police Act
(2001).

What is a Designated Public Places Order?
The
Criminal Justice and Police Act (2001) introduced new powers for
Local Authorities to designate certain public areas where nuisance
or disorder has occurred that can be linked with the consumption of
alcohol.
In areas where a Designated Public Places
Order is in place, the Police have the power to confiscate alcohol
from people that are behaving in an anti-social way.
If a person continues to drink in public when
asked not to do so, the Police can arrest them and they may be
fined up to £500 if convicted.
The Police also have the power to arrest people who fail to
surrender alcohol when asked to do so.
