Replacing Windows
You will require Listed Building Consent to replace any windows
in a Listed Building, on any elevation, regardless of what you are
replacing them with.
Each Listed Building application we receive is judged on its own
merits.
However, generally, it is unlikely that consent will be granted
for any UPVC work to listed buildings.
An application will be judged at several levels:
- In cases where the existing windows are of historic or
architectural interest such that would warrant their retention, we
would look at possibilities or repair and refurbishment in
preference to wholesale replacement.
- If we believe the condition of timber windows to be so poor as
to prohibit effective repair, we would generally be seeking like
for like replacement with purpose made joinery.
- Where the existing windows themselves are more modern
installations, we would expect the proposed replacements to be of a
style and construction appropriate to the particular Listed
Building.
Listed Building Consent is also required to alter the colour of
windows, and to install secondary glazing systems.

Several national companies offer window refurbishment services,
both in terms of repair of window types ranging from timber sashes
to metal frames and replacement handmade glass, and in upgrading of
thermal and acoustic performance.
Many of these advertise in the Building
Conservation Directory.
However, there may well be other smaller, local companies who
can offer a comparative service. Please be aware that the Council
can neither endorse nor recommend any product, company or
supplier.
