Street Cleansing

Dog Waste BinThe cleansing of the Town’s roads is currently contracted out to BIFFA, who have had the contract for six years.

The state of the streets and other areas is constantly monitored and the schedules amended to ensure the contractor’s resources are allocated where there is the most need, and as the town grows the re-allocation of resources becomes more important.

  • Town Centres - Daily
  • Most urban residential areas are litter picked and road swept - Fortnightly
  • Rural roadsweeps of kerbed areas - Monthly
  • Busy town footways - Weekly
  • Housing garage areas - Quarterly
  • Car Parks - Quarterly
  • Weed control - Twice per year

As part of the Council's efforts to keep the town clean and tidy, there are 306 dog waste bins and just over 800 litter bins.

It is estimated that this year that the Council will need to spend in the region of £950,000 keeping the streets of the Borough clean,  if residents and visitors didn't just discard their rubbish, this money could be invested in new facilities for the town.

On new developments, street cleansing can sometimes become a problem, as the Council does not take on the responsibility for the cleansing until the road has been adopted by the Council.  Until that time the cleansing remains the responsibility of the developer.

Ashford Borough Council is not responsible for cleaning rear alleyways, unadopted roads or private property.

If there is an obstruction on the highway, this should be reported to Kent County Council, Highways Unit on 08458 247800.  If the obstruction is on the A2070 Ashford to Brenzett road, this should be reported to The Highways Agency’s Contractor, Interoute on 01634 385503.
