Singleton Giant

Flora, the Singleton GiantFlora the Singleton Giant is officially the largest resident the Ashford has ever seen.

Created by Strange Cargo Arts Company, 14ft Flora stands on a wheeled wooden frame using a combination of basketwork, papier mache and textiles. Designed to reflect the borough it represents, her costume refers to the natural surroundings, from bark and leaves in her cloak to the lizards, which cascade down her back.

Flora is now looked after by the community of Singleton and graces many local and national events.

For more information on Flora, please email amanda.chappell1@ntlworld.com or visit Flora's website.

The Lost O

Lost OAshford experienced the 'Lost O' which celebrated the Ashford's ring roads disappearance into a 2-way shared space, artists from all over the world produced a dynamic programme of temporary public art works. It included live stock being herded through streets, the reinvention of road signs and graffiti on pavements.

A video has just become available online celebrating the event.

Nimby

Nimby the ElephantNimby, the Ashford Elephant was created by up and coming Ashford based artist Oliver Winconek.  Built off his own back and created in an old empty warehouse, the beautiful lifesize creation was erected on SEEDA owned wasteland in October 2007 (now an Ashford Borough Council car park).  Nimby the Elephant was born out of a desire to create something new and exciting for Ashford.  It was designed to reflect some peoples views towards large scale public art.  Some see it as boisterous and destructive and makes waves to try and stop it happening whilst the majority realise it is just a bit of fun and should be encouraged.

Due to public demand, Nimby greeted her friends and fans in Bank Street whilst out shopping in the Ashford's January sales and even stayed over for a few weeks in the old cattle market site on Elwick Road.

Oliver has since exhibited work around Europe alongside Banksy, Dface, Blek le Rat and Nick Walker.
