The Horse Project

Horse ProjectThe artist Robert Koenig was commissioned in 2001 by Ashford Borough Council and Stevenson Brothers to create a public sculpture near Great Chart in Ashford.

Robert gained inspiration by spending time working at Stevenson Brothers’ workshop at Linden Garage outside Bethersden. He observed how the workshop’s craftsmen create rocking horses and came up with the idea of symbolising moving forward - a family group atop a giant horse.

Robert worked with whole tree trunks, sometimes vast in scale, carving the general shapes out of the wood with a chainsaw, then finishing off by hand with mallet and chisel with amazing precision.

The sculpture was installed in the autumn of 2002, and sits on the roadside verge of the A28, on the approach to Chart Road roundabout.
