Appledore
Appledore is situated on the
B2080 from Tenterden to New Romney. Appledore, once a port on the
Rother Estuary part of the ancient "Saxon Shoreway", first came
into history in 892 when 250 Danish Longships made it their base
for an invasion of England. Further trouble reached Appledore by
way of the Rother when the French sailed up to it in 1380 and
burned the church and village.
The village played its part in Wat Tyler's and then Jack Cade's
risings and then it settled down as a prosperous market town until
the Rother was diverted to the other side of Oxney in the 17th
century. The main industry of the village is now farming. The 14th
century church houses an annual Festival of Flowers and the
Street, with its mediaeval houses and old forge, is most
attractive. The Royal Military Canal runs through Appledore to the
Iden Lock in the west and to Hythe in the east and provides
excellent walks, fishing available by day tickets. The Saxon
Shore long distance footpath passes through the village.
Appledore is included in the Romney Marsh and Rye Rural Development
Area. A book entitled the "History of Appledore", written by Sir
John Winnifrith, is available locally.
