Bonnington

BonningtonBonnington is mentioned in the Domesday Book and was owned by the Knights Templar in the 14th century. Sailing barges from Rye used to come up the River Rother and the Royal Military Canal as far as Bonnington Bridge and the field near the bridge is still called the Coal Wharf. On the village green is an old tree called the Law-Day Oak, under which the Leet Court sat to hear local pleas. The parish church of St. Rumwold has some unusual early Norman windows in the chancel.
