Great Chart

Great ChartThe old, attractive village of Great Chart has a long history and is referred to in many ancient documents and there are several references to the sacking of the village 1,100 years ago by the Danes. The Parish of Great Chart was enlarged in 1987 to include the large comprehensive development of Singleton and the parish is now divided into two Wards - Great Chart with Singleton North and Singleton South. Three quarters of the residents of the parish live in the Ward of Great Chart with Singleton North and the remainder in Singleton South Ward. The village street is a conservation area and most of the properties are Listed Buildings. Several examples of magnificent architecture still exist, including the perpendicular Church of St. Mary with its mediaeval glass windows, the building known locally as the "Pest House", the moated Singleton Manor, Yardhurst, Goldwell Manor, Yeomans, Court Lodge, Godinton, Bucksford, Buxford Mill and Worten Mill. There is some light industry in the Chilmington and Daniels Water area and there are riding stables and kennels.
