Newenden
One of the best features in
the village is a recently repaired humpback bridge dating back to
1736, which still rests on its old oak base. St. Peter's Church has
a Jacobean pulpit and a late Norman carved font. The Carmelite
Priory of Lossenham was founded in about 1242 but no trace of the
mediaeval buildings have been found. On the marshes near the Hexden
Channel is an ancient earthwork called Castle Toll, which was built
by the Saxons to defend themselves against Danish invaders.
