Orlestone (Hamstreet)

HamstreetHamstreet village, in the heart of Orlestone parish, is where most of the population lives, although the ancient parish boundary means that part of the village falls within Warehorne parish. The parish church of St Mary's is located at Orlestone, the original site of the village. There is adequate provision for day-to-day shopping and the Victory Hall is the venue for many of the social activities that take place in the village. The Greensand Way and Saxon Shore Way long distance footpaths run through Hamstreet Woods National Nature Reserve, an area of great interest visited by many people throughout the year. A second area of public woodland can be found northwest of the village at Orlestone Forest. The stretch of the Royal Military Canal, which runs through the parish, is popular with anglers as well as ramblers. Maps of the village were featured on a set of postage stamps in 1991 to mark the bicentenery of the Ordnance Survey. This was because the Hamstreet area was the first to be mapped. Twinned with Therouanne village in France. A photographic history of the village is available locally.
