Smarden

SmardenSmarden is one of the most beautiful and well-kept villages in Kent and is popular with tourists. There are many period houses and more than 100 listed buildings in the parish. The 14th/15th century church is known as the Barn of Kent because of its wide scissor-beamed roof, unsupported by pillars. In the church hangs a copy of the Charter, first granted by Edward III and endorsed by Elizabeth I, giving permission to hold a weekly market and an annual fair, a means of encouraging the woollen trade that was then so important to the area.
