Beacon Status

The Government's Beacon Award scheme recognises excellence and innovation in local government.  It is not just an award, but also a responsibility to share best practice and knowledge with other authorities.

Ashford Borough Council is the proud recipient of two Beacon Awards in the last two years.

Beacon status is granted to those authorities who can demonstrate a clear vision, excellent services and a willingness to innovate within a theme. Awards are made by Government ministers based on recommendations made by an independent advisory panel.

Beacon Authority for Promoting Sustainable Communities Through the Planning Process

Ashford Borough Council was 1 of only 4 Council's in the country to have been awarded Beacon Status for promoting sustainable communities through the planning process.

The award reflects Councils that have worked hard to make sure that residents have an active involvement in designing high quality masterplans and making better places.

Designated by the Government as a growth area, a £650 million investment programme is under way in Ashford to provide 31,000 new homes and 28,000 jobs by 2031.

Right from the start Ashford Borough Council have taken a proactive approach in engaging the community in both site work and masterplanning through numerous community design workshops.

We were awarded the prestigious Beacon award in 2005/06 for Asset Management.

Following the end of the Beacon year, a further grant was made available for the five Asset Management Beacon Councils (Ashford, Cambridgeshire, Leeds, Hertfordshire and Rotherham) to carry out peer support work to assist councils that wish to improve their asset management.  Further information can be obtained from Jane Devine at Rotherham Council, telephone 01709 823859 or fax 01709 379419.
