Legal and Democratic Services is responsible for...

• legal advice and support to the Council and its individual service areas and officers, advice on all major Council projects, land and property transactions, court proceedings etc.
• officer support to the democratic and decision-making processes of the Council, including the overview and scrutiny function and the mayoralty
• electoral registration and the administration of local, national and European elections
• the Head of Legal and Democratic Services is the Council's statutory Monitoring Officer and principle adviser to the Council's Standards Committee which is responsible for ethical framework and code of conduct issues and Ombudsman matters.
