Biography

Cllr. Wells was born 26th of October 1936 and was brought up in East and South East London.

He attended the Co-Operative College gaining certificates in Management and Business Studies; being one of the first managers to gain the Institute of Co-Operative Directors Diploma in Management, MICD.

On leaving school Cllr. Wells started his career in retailing with the Co-Op movement and over the years rose from Shop Assistant to National Sales Development Officer for Southern England working in Bristol, Reading, Bracknell, Ashford and Manchester.  In 1974 Cllr. Wells left the Co-Op to train as a teacher, but he was enticed back to the Co-Op in 1975.

Management changes in the late 1980s forced early retirement but in 1989 with the help of his wife they started their own business in fabrics and furnishings, and successfully traded until 2000 when they decided to retire from business life.

Between 1971 and 1977 Cllr. Wells was a member of the Kent Special Constabulary and between 1986 and 1988 he was a member of the Ashford Homeowners Action Group.

Since 1989 Cllr. Wells has represented the Woolreeds, now Beaver ward, and hopes that he has been able to assist people in some small way.  His personal interests are music, both classical and jazz, steam railways and food and wine.

The family traces its connections with Ashford back to 1790, and before that Tenterden and the Romney Marsh.  In 1956 Cllr. Wells met his wife Christine, they have a daughter Sara and a son Paul who are both married with children of their own.
