Local Government in East Kent
During 2016 the five East Kent district councils – Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Shepway and Thanet – undertook an exercise to explore the feasibility of establishing a new single council for Kent.
The purpose of a potential merger was set out in a Statement of intent [pdf] 146KB, which was agreed by all the councils.
From the results of the five-way business case, Ashford Borough Council agreed at an early stage to withdraw from the process, but to remain committed to working closely with any future new council.
A four-way business case was subsequently put together in March 2017. Dover and Thanet Councils voted to pursue a merger; Shepway voted not to proceed, and Canterbury did not vote.
The councils will now take time to consider any further options and this page will be updated when there is further news.
