Biography
Born Gerald Dawson Clarkson in 1939, and educated at Westminster
Technical College, followed by an electrical engineering
apprenticeship. Cllr. Clarkson joined the Royal Engineers for his
National Service, after which he enrolled into the London Fire
Brigade as a professional Firefighter. During his career,
spanning 30 years, he was promoted through the ranks to become The
Chief Fire Officer for London and appointed the Chief Executive
Officer of the London Fire & Civil Defence Authority. This
meant effectively managing an organisation of over 7,000 uniformed
& non-uniformed staff and a budget of over £200 million at 1991
prices.
Cllr. Clarkson has commanded many major
operational incidents and lectured worldwide. In addition to
the Fire Brigades Long Service Medal in 1991, he was awarded the
Queen’s Fire Service Medal for distinguished service in the1983
Birthday Honours and was further honoured by Her Majesty in her
1990 Birthdays Honours with the CBE (Commander of the British
Empire). He holds a BA (Hons) degree in economics &
industrial relations and is a Freeman of the City of London.
He has lived in the Charing area since
retiring some 16 years ago. He has served for 8 years as a Member
of the Kent Police Authority and has been the Chairman of the
Charing & Charing Heath Branch of the Conservative Party since
1993. Happily married for the last 48 years to Rose, he
has two grown up children Nicholas and Penelope, both of whom are
married with four children each. Both families live fairly near and
he therefore sees his eight grand children very frequently.
