Animal Boarding Welfare

The accommodation should be insulated against extreme heat and cold, and in a wooden construction it is important that the insulation is fireproof.

Heating should be provided to ensure that there is an area which does not drop below 7oC.  It is important to exclude draughts but still give good ventilation in warm weather.

The accommodation should be well lit by a source of daylight but with adequate artificial lighting to allow proper maintenance of the compartments.  Where artificial lighting and heating is provided, it is essential that these cannot be damaged by the animals.

In most cases, separate kitchen facilities should be provided and these should include:

  • a sink and wash hand basin with tiled surrounds
  • a deep freeze for fresh meats
  • rodent control bins for dry food
  • all surfaces should be ‘easy clean’

Feeding utensils should be cleaned after each meal.  Beds and benches should be large enough for the animal concerned, comfortable and preferably removable for easy cleaning at least twice weekly and after each occupant.  Cats bedding should be checked daily in case of soiling.  Cats must be provided with a sanitary tray at all times.  All animals must be both exercised and visited at suitable intervals ad with this in mind, there should be someone resident on the premises at all times.  If it is necessary to leave the premises and in case of emergencies the name, address and telephone number of a responsible key holder who lives nearby shall be conspicuously displayed on the premises.

A suitable number of fire fighting appliances must be provided on the premises and a means of escape shall be maintained in case of emergencies.
