Suggestions for People with Rural Drainage Systems

To ensure regular maintenance and that the wrong things don’t end up in your tank:-

Put a notice somewhere within the building near sinks or toilets describing the necessary maintenance eg. " Please do not put unsuitable bleaches, chemicals, sanitary towels, panty liners, disposable nappies, wet wipes, tampons, fat or oil of any type into the toilet or waste pipes. The foul drainage (sewage) from this property discharges to a septic tank/treatment plant and a soakaway, reedbed or watercourse."

The owner is legally responsible to ensure that the system does not cause pollution, a health hazard or a nuisance.
