Grounds Maintenance
Some of the towns major
open spaces are:
- Victoria Park (land purchased from Mr Jemmett in 1898)
- William Road Field
- The Ridge, Kennington
- The Queen Mother's Park
- Cudworth Road
- Willesborough Recreation Ground
- The Memorial Gardens
- The Old Burial Ground (closed in 1859)
We are responsible for most of the open space in Ashford Town
and have a proactive approach to maintaining the towns open spaces,
and we are constantly looking at ways to improve them.
In recent years we have made major improvements to the open
spaces in Cudworth Road, Victoria Park and Bowen's Field, and
as part of this work have carried out a number of planting schemes
where traditional fruit trees and Kent Cobb Nut trees were planted
and are now established in what are referred to as
'public orchards', a similar project has also been carried out in
Bethersden. The Fountain in Victoria Park was refurbished in
2007.
This year work is being carried out in Watercress Field to
enhance the tree planting, some poor specimens are being removed
with further planting being carried out.
The Queen Mother's Park is a haven for wildlife with a lot of
the area set aside as natural habitat. In conjunction with
The Kentish Stour Countryside Project, over the past few years
there has been a planting program native wild flowers.
Bowen's Field has been part of the Town's flood prevention
measures for a number of years, as part of the project that was
partly funded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, the
retention basins have been re-contoured and planted with a variety
of reeds to improve their conservation value. The work has
also made the area a far more interesting place for visitors to
walk with a number of species of butterfly, kingfishers and reed
buntings visiting there, whilst retaining a grassed area for
people to play.
One of our projects, over the past two years, and as an ongoing
project, we are working to open up the banks to the River Stour to
increase the visual aspects on the riverside walks and again this
work is providing new natural habitats for wildlife. The
areas adjacent to the River Stour that runs through the
town, are collectively referred to as The Green
Corridor.
