Energy Conservation
We are currently involved in many pioneering schemes that place
a big emphasis on energy conservation and the environment.
Zero Carbon
Homes - We have announced groundbreaking plans for the South
East’s first “zero-carbon” affordable housing scheme in partnership
with Hyde Housing Association.
Singleton Environment Centre - We have
contributed towards the new centre which will provide a full and
imaginative programme of environmental, conservation and
educational activities catering for people of all ages, from both
the local community and visitors to Ashford.
In the Local Development Framework the Council has adopted the
term Sustainable
Energy, which is focused on the use of renewable energy and
low-carbon energy sources in all future planning developments
within the borough.
Energy Efficiency
Ashford Borough Council is committed to reducing the amount of
energy we consume in a bid to reduce our carbon footprint.
Last year we signed the Nottingham Declaration – a commitment to
address climate
change issues in the borough and act as a champion for
environmental sustainability.
We’re currently reviewing how we operate to identify measures to
reduce our carbon emissions and energy consumption – looking at how
we can manage our assets such as buildings and council housing
stock and deliver key services such as planning and refuse
collection in the most environmentally sustainable
way.
Further Information
- The Energy Saving Trust (EST) is a not for profit organisation
funded by the government and private sector investment. Its goals
are to achieve sustainable and efficient use of energy and to cut
carbon dioxide emissions, which cause the earth to heat up. For
information on their 'grant finder for household energy
improvements', visit the Energy Saving Trust website
- The Kent Energy Centre offers information regarding grants and
discounts on insulation and heating. They also offer an on-line
energy check to see what your house needs to make it warmer and
cheaper to run. Visit the Kent Energy Centre
website
- The CarbonTrust is a government-funded independent company,
helping businesses and the public sector to cut carbon emissions
and to exploit the potential of low carbon technologies. Visit the
CarbonTrust website
- You can see an overview of evidence, impacts and policies on
climate change at the BBC Weather Centre
- Schools can join the Sustainable Learning
scheme which has been deliberately tailored to complement the
Eco-Schools programme.
