Road Traffic

MotorwayThe council does not have any legislation to deal with general noise from vehicles on a road.

We are not able to deal with one-off events or moving vehicles with loud car stereos.

If a road near your property is new or has been significantly altered and causes an increase in interference in terms of noise you should discuss this issue with Kent Highways Services, email kent.highwayservices@kent.gov.uk.

Exhaust Fumes

The effects of motor vehicle fumes are monitored at fixed locations throughout the borough. Nitrogen dioxide, the main pollutant from vehicle exhaust, is measured at kerbside and background locations to give an indication of the effects of traffic on air quality.  You can view the results on our Air Quality webpage.

Reporting Smoky Vehicles

The Police may use Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) regulations if an individually identified vehicle is making excessive engine noise or omitting excessive fumes.  To report a smoky vehicle telephone the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) on 0870 6060 440 with the vehicle model and registration and the time, date and location it was seen.
