Barking Dogs

Barking DogDogs bark naturally - however, constant barking, whining or howling can be disturbing and annoying for you and your neighbours and is not normal dog behaviour.

Dog owners, particularly if they are at work all day, may not realise that while they are away the dog is causing a problem. Many dog owners are concerned when they realise their dog is in distress while they are away.

If you experience a problem with a barking dog, approaching the owner is a useful first step. Dog barking is not difficult to resolve as there is plenty of assistance and advice available from Dog Trust, vets, pet behaviourists, RSPCA and other animal charities.

We have successfully prosecuted irresponsible dog owners who have continued to allow their dogs to cause nuisance but this is the exception rather than the rule. It is rarely the dog’s fault.

  • Don’t leave dogs alone for long periods of time. It isn’t fair on the dog or the neighbours
  • The majority of dog barking complaints we deal with are about dogs left in the garden while the owner goes to work
  • Don’t be tempted to leave outbuildings open. Empty garages left open as a shelter for dogs can mean the barking is amplified and carries a longer distance as it echoes off the walls

See the DirectGov website to give you some ideas about how to solve the problem of a barking dog.
