Musical Instruments

MusicInstruments should be played at hours when it is less likely to disturb neighbours. If you need regular practice for piano, wind instruments, brass instruments, string instruments etc make an agreement with neighbours.

Drums, Bass Guitars and Brass

Drum kits, electric bass guitars and brass instruments in particular can be very loud. Drums can be damped or you can soundproof the room where you play.  A combination of the elements below can help prevent noise complaints:

  • Sound proof room including floors and ceilings as well as walls
  • Use practice pads
  • Agree times with neighbours with signed agreement by parent and teenager or the drum player (eg. max 1 hour a day during sociable times)
  • Sound proof booth
  • Sympathetic beaters (hot rods)
  • Use practice sticks (drumsticks made up of a number of thinner sticks. Pressure is lost in transfer to the other sticks rather than transferred on the drum, meaning that a lower noise is produced)
  • Use drumming brushes (quieter than practice sticks)
  • Blankets inside bass drum
  • Purchase electronic drum kit (digital kit) to be used with earphones
  • Arrange to practice elsewhere, where it is sound proofed and uses a combination of the above measures
