Blue Box Recycling Scheme
The
Blue Box Scheme provides an alternate week kerbside collection
service for yellowpages and telephone directories, newspapers and
magazines (including mail order catalogues), glass containers and
cans, including aerosol cans that contain no gas.
The service cannot deal with the following
materials.
- Shredded Paper
Because of the collection method, shredded paper is not collected
as it causes a litter problem. You can take your shredded paper to
the houshold waste site or take it to one of the supermarkets where
there is a cardboard bank, please leave the shredded paper in a
carrier bag when you place it in the bank.
- Enveloped and Junk Mail
We have to exclude all envelopes and junk mail, this type of
material is printed on various colured paper and some has
windows, the paper we recycle is used to make newsprint, if
there is coloured paper in the containers, it will contaminate
the load, which could get it rejected by the mill.
- Cardboard
We have to exclude cardboard as the paper we recycle is used to
make newsprint and cardboard contaminates the material.
- Plastic Bottles and Containers
The Council does not provide a separate collection service for
plastics. The cost of provising such a service is very
expensive and we believe it is not in residents best interest to
provide this service, however, your domestic waste normally goes to
the Allington Incinerator, where it is used as fuel.
- Tin Foil and Window Glass
The composition of tin foil is different to cans which means we
cannot collect it as part of this service.
Window glass is a different composition to jars and bottles which
means it cannot be recycled as part of this service.
There are currently 26,920 properties in the Blue Box Scheme,

Recycling
There are recycling sites at all of the major supermarkets and
the majority of village halls. Facilities are available for glass,
paper and cans at most sites, with some having textile and shoe

We also provide a kerbside alternate week collection
service (The Box Clever or Blue Box Scheme) for some dry
recyclable waste, with collections in urban Ashford and Tenterden,
