Food Safety Audit

Food Safety Audit Thumbs Up
An audit by the Food Standards Agency into Ashford Borough
Council’s current processes has confirmed that the council are
effectively delivering and managing food hygiene law, with several
systems and initiatives highlighted as examples of good
practice.
The audit, carried out in May, 2008, was undertaken by the Food
Standards Agency as part of their annual programme to review local
authority food law enforcement services.
They concluded that the council was “operating systems
and arrangements that were effective in supporting business
compliance, and that local enforcement was managed and delivered
effectively”.
The scope of the audit included the assessment of systems and
arrangements for food premises database management, food premises
inspections and internal monitoring procedures for food hygiene law
enforcement activities.
Ashford Borough Council’s Environmental Health Manager, Sheila
Davison, said: “We are extremely pleased with the outcome of the
audit and are delighted that there were no areas identified for
corrective action.”
As a further endorsement of the council’s work in this area,
several examples of good practice were highlighted, including the
development work undertaken with database providers to maximise
performance and the creation of a tracker system, designed to
follow up on unsatisfactory food samples, with guidance being
issued to the food business operators.
Cllr Bell, portfolio holder for environmental services, said:
“This is an excellent result and I would like to thank those
involved with the food service for the good work that they do week
in, week out.
“Residents can feel confident that our officers are doing an
excellent job in encouraging and enforcing food hygiene standards
in over 1,000 pubs, clubs, restaurants, and other food businesses
throughout the borough.”
