Cooling Tower Notification

Cooling towers and evaporative condensers have been associated with outbreaks of Legionella.

The Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condenser Regulations 1992  imposes a duty on a person who has control of a premises with any of the following to notify Environmental Health by completing and sending in this application form.

The devices include:

Cooling Tower - (a device whose main purpose is to cool water by direct contact between that water and a stream of air.  The device may use either a mechanical or natural draft);

Evaporative Condenser  - (a device whose main purpose is to cool a fluid by passing that fluid through a heat exchanger which itself is cooled by contact with water passing through a stream of air);

Adiabatic Cooling Device - (a evaporative dry cooling process) but only notifiable if it has a wet pre-cooling process.

To see a list of cooling towers registered with the Council click here and search for them under licence type.

The main purpose of registering your cooling tower is to identify potential sources of risk and allow the relevant health & safety enforcing authority monitor and inspect them.

Further information about Legionella is available from the HSE website and a leaflet to guide employers can be downloaded here.
