Tenterden Folk Festival 2010
The 18th Tenterden Folk Festival takes place from 30th September
to 3rd October 2010 and offers four days of folk song, music and
dance.
The festival is part of a registered charity set up in 1994 to
preserve and advance public education and appreciation of
traditional and contemporary folk music, song, dance and other
related traditions, crafts and folk arts as a part of the living
heritage.
The Trust is supported by Ashford Borough Council, Kent County
Council, Tenterden Town Council and an increasing number of
businesses and other community organisations. The emphasis of the
festival is traditional English folk music and many events are
participatory such as free sing-a-rounds and sessions and there is
also an English barn dance and various folk related workshops such
as Contra dancing and West Gallery music.
That does not mean to say that there are not plenty of
opportunities to just sit and listen to the music as there are also
concerts and folk clubs featuring professional folk singers from
all over the country. The festival is independent and relies
entirely on volunteers to make it happen but it continues to
develop and grow.
This year events start on Thursday evening with a special show
at the Sinden theatre; Waltzers & Wonders: the Wakes is in Town
featured The Ram Company from Derbyshire and the band will also be
playing for the Barn Dance on Friday evening.
Another new development is the addition of four marquees on The
Recreation Ground to act as an the venue of the Craft Fair on
Saturday and Sunday and another marquee to house the free music
showcase stage. There will also be over 40 Morris and folk dance
teams attending the festival over the weekend and taking part in
Saturday’s procession.
