New rural sports officer
For
the first time ever, rural areas in Ashford will now have their own
dedicated sports officer.
Christian Burwash (39) has been brought in by Ashford Borough
Council to launch a programme of activities ranging from cycling to
dance for the borough’s rural communities, as part of the Active
Together initiative.
Initially targeting Bethersden, physical activities specialist
Christian will be moving on to all rural parts of Ashford, focusing
on the needs of the over 50’s and people with disabilities.
Christian has more than 10 years experience in sport development
and is a qualified fencing, archery and boccia coach.
He said: “It is a really exciting time for the rural areas in
Ashford and this will be a great opportunity to offer the people a
range of activities.
“We hope that everybody will get behind us and offer their input
and support.”
Ward member covering Bethersden Councillor Robert Taylor added:
"The new initiative to increase Ashford's support to our villages
is doubly welcome.
“First it shows the importance of improving the leisure
facilities, so necessary to maintaining our rural life, and second
because Bethersden is a very worthy choice - an active village
which I know will welcome and make full use of this initiative.
“I look forward to Christian's success in the coming
months.”
The Active Together scheme is part of the wider Active Ashford
partnership, giving more people opportunities in sport and physical
activity, and follows on from other successful projects, like
Active Swim.
In the first 8 months of the Active Ashford schemes, more than
3,000 people of all ages and abilities have taken part.
