Safety workshops saved

An annual initiative which gives safety advice to primary
school children in Ashford has been saved from the axe thanks to
Towers School.
Now in its 6th year the Safety in Action event, which is organised
by the Community Safety Unit, involves a fortnight of interactive
workshops for year 6 children by Kent Fire & Rescue Service,
Kent Police, British Transport Police, Ashford Borough Council,
Royal National Lifeboat Institution and Towers students to
emphasise the hidden dangers of everyday life.
Cuts in funding from central government meant the future of the
annual event was in doubt.
However, following this year’s workshop an appeal was made for
local business leaders to come forward and help support them in
future.
As a result, the head teacher of the Towers School, Graham Ralph
has stepped in and offered to host the event free of charge.
Mr Ralph said: “Any opportunity for children and young people to
learn how to keep themselves and their friends safe in any given
situation is a vital part of their wider educational experience.
‘Safety in Action’ is an event that is too important for the local
education community to lose.”
Plans are already underway for the event in 2012 which will be held
between 18th - 29th June, with a huge number of schools already
expressing an interest in their pupils getting involved.
David Lloyd, Community Safety Manager, said: “I cannot express how
grateful the Community Safety Unit is at the generous offer by
Towers School.
"This step goes a long way to ensuring children make the transition
from primary school to secondary school as safely as
possible.”
