Victoria Way thumbs up
Ashford Borough
Council’s Planning Committee has given the thumbs up on plans to
build a new road which will improve access to and from the station
and town centre. The application now has to go before Kent County
Council’s planning committee in the next few months for final
approval.
Victoria Way is a proposed new route south of Ashford town
centre linking the International Station at Romney Marsh Road and
the A28 at Great Chart.
Cllr John Kemp, portfolio holder for planning and development,
said: “Ashford town centre is undergoing an exciting transformation
to create a prosperous and exciting place to live, work and do
business.
“By unlocking large brownfield sites for regeneration,
preserving and improving access and helping to make the area look
nicer, Victoria Way will play an important role in the town
centre’s expansion.”
The initial phase of the project will open up the transport
link, following the existing Victoria Road, through to the end of
Leacon Road by Matalan and onto to the A28, and will incorporate
some high quality finishes and a new public square.
Work is expected to begin in spring 2010 to finish the following
spring.
The ultimate vision is for Victoria Way to be a 24m wide urban
avenue, with wider pavements, cycle and traffic turning lanes,
landscaping, and opportunities for new shops, restaurants and
cafes. It is hoped this will be completed by 2021.
Andy Phillips, Head of Transport for Ashford’s Future,
explained: “The vision for Victoria Way is to create a high quality
town centre street, providing excellent public transport links to
the wider growth areas to the south of Ashford and unlocking
development sites for the expansion of the town centre.”
