Chilmington Green Area Action Plan

The Chilmington Green Area Action Plan (AAP) proposes a policy framework to deliver a major urban extension to Ashford of up to 5,750 homes and 1,000 jobs, over a period of twenty five years or so.  It contains policies on several topics, such as community infrastructure, transport improvements, ecology and what character the different parts of the site should have.

Public Consultation on the AAP

The Publication document is the version of the AAP which the Council intends to submit to the Secretary of State for public examination by an independent government inspector. The Council may wish to make changes to the contents of this Publication version, in light of any comments received. Should these be significant changes, another formal consultation exercise will take place later in the year.

The AAP is open for public consultation between Monday 16th April to Monday 11th June

Public Exhibitions of the AAP

Public exhibitions are being held during the consultation period to allow residents to come and look at details of the plan and ask questions. They will operate on a drop-in basis and are open to all members of the public.

  • Wednesday 2nd May. Singleton Environment Centre, Wesley School Road, Singleton. 10am - 8pm.
  • Wednesday 23rd May. Kingsnorth CEP School, Church Hill, Kingsnorth. 5pm-8pm
  • Wednesday 30th May. Shadoxhurst Village Hall, Hornash Lane, Shadoxhurst. 5pm - 8pm.

Hard copies of the AAP and supporting documents will also be available to view throughout the consultation period during opening hours at a number of deposit points in the Borough.

NB: The copies of the AAP that are at the deposit points contain an administrative error in the key to the Proposals Map. The Secondary School and the Park and Ride are incorrectly labelled and should be swapped over.

Comments on the AAP can also be made in writing to:

Planning Policy, Planning and Development Unit, Ashford Borough Council, Civic Centre, Tannery Lane, Ashford, Kent, TN23 1PL.

Please call 01233 330229 or email to request a formal representation form and guidance notes.

We can only consider formally made comments that are received by 5 pm on the 11th June 2012.

Why is development happening at Chilmington Green?

The principle of development at Chilmington Green is established in the Council’s Core Strategy. The Core Strategy was ‘adopted’ in 2008 following the production of a wide range of evidence which set out where growth could be accommodated within the borough, a period of public consultation and a formal ‘Examination in Public’ by an independent, government appointed planning Inspector. You can find out more on the Core Strategy here.

The change in government in May 2010 has lead to the removal of centrally designated housing targets, but the principle of development at Chilmington Green remains established in the Core Strategy. The focus now is to plan for the creation of a great place to live. This will involve looking very closely at the density, design and layout of development, types of land uses and the best range of local facilities that can be achieved.

What is the current timetable for the Area Action Plan?

The key milestones for the AAP process are:

  • Submission of the AAP to Secretary of State: October 2012
  • Examination in Public: Late 2012 / Early 2013
  • Adoption of AAP by ABC: by mid 2013
