Free festive parking

Festive shoppers can enjoy free parking in all council-owned car parks in Ashford and Tenterden on Sundays before Christmas.

Ashford Borough Council is once again offering free parking in both towns to encourage as many people as possible to do their Christmas shopping locally, and support local businesses.

Free parking will be available in ALL council-run car parks in Ashford and Tenterden on the following days:

  • Sunday 16 December
  • Sunday 23 December

*The only exceptions will be the new Elwick Place car park (Ashford) where normal charges will apply on both days and the Recreation Ground Road car park (Tenterden), where normal charges will apply on Sunday 23 December.

All car parks run by Ashford Borough Council are free after 6pm.

For more information visit our free parking page.

Don’t let food poisoning ruin your festive celebrations

If there’s one thing guaranteed to ruin your Christmas meal out with friends, family or colleagues, it’s a nasty bout of food poisoning.

But if you’re eating out, how do you know if the restaurant owner takes food hygiene seriously?

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme rates eateries and other places that sell food on their hygiene standards, based on inspections carried out by Ashford Borough Council. What’s more, these ratings are available for everyone to see.

This national scheme, developed by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in partnership with local authorities, rates food outlets on a scale ranging from zero at the bottom (which means ‘urgent improvement necessary’) to a top rating of five (‘very good’).

You can check the food rating online at www.food.gov.uk/ratings, via a free phone app, or look for the distinctive green and black rating sticker that businesses are encouraged to display.

If you’re organising a Christmas gathering with family, friends or work colleagues at a local restaurant, pub or hotel don’t just examine the menu, also check what their hygiene rating is too.

Recycle your Christmas tree

If you subscribe to our garden recycling service, you can place your cut up tree in your brown wheeled bin and we will collect it. To sign up to our fortnightly garden recycling collection service visit the Garden Recycling webpage.

Or why not support the Pilgrims Hospices by signing up to their treecycling service.

The service will run from 12 January 2019 and residents across the borough can have their tree collected in return for a donation of their choice. Online registration is now open and will close at midnight on Sunday 6 January 2019. Simply visit the Pilgrims Hospices website or call 01233 504111.
