Ashford Borough Council is excited to announce the Energy Is Power – Showcasing Community Energy event, in collaboration with Community Energy Pathways. It is taking place on Thursday 12 June from 10:30am to 3pm at The Ashford Cinema, Elwick Place, Ashford.

About community energy:

Community energy projects involve the generation of energy by the community, for the community, with a focus on renewable energy sources and energy efficiency. These initiatives aim to reduce energy costs and improve sustainability while fostering a co-operative spirit. Projects can range from community-funded refurbishments of public buildings, such as village halls, to community-led energy generation efforts like shared rooftop solar schemes or wind turbines with localised tariffs. Many community energy groups also set up local energy advice schemes. The local community directly benefits from these projects through local ownership of assets that provide cheaper bills and community funds.

Why attend?

If you are interested in learning more about community energy or have a project in mind, this event is the perfect opportunity to discover the key steps to move forward. Attendees will gain insights into research and planning, understanding the energy needs of their community and available support.

Inspiring talks and speakers:

This year's event will feature inspiring talks from notable figures in community energy and sustainability:

  • Matthew Goldschmied, Architectural Technologist (RVI Architectural Design): Matthew has over two decades experience in residential and commercial design and development, specialising in sustainable renovation and low-carbon retrofit. His projects range from single homes to community initiatives, always striving for a dignified, sustainable, and comfortable transition to a healthier future.
  • Speakers from Community Energy Pathways: Recent recipients of the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise, this organisation specialises in guiding communities through the process of creating and managing their own energy projects, providing valuable information from conception to implementation.
  • Head of Local Energy at DESNZ: A leading voice from the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero will discuss national policies, support mechanisms, and the broader impact of community energy on the nation’s energy landscape.

Networking and Q&A session:

Attendees will have the opportunity to network over coffee, share ideas, and ask questions during a dedicated Q&A session. This will be a valuable chance to connect with other community members, experts, and advocates passionate about sustainable energy solutions.
