Ways Of Voting

Voting in Person

You can vote in person at your allocated polling station unless you have already opted to vote by post. You can use the polling station finder to locate your polling station for the elections to be held on Thursday 4 May 2023

New legislation means that you must show photo ID before you can be issued with a ballot paper. To view the full list of acceptable photo ID please go to the Voter ID page on the Electoral Commission's website.

If you do not have photo ID you find out can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. Information on how to apply is available from the Electoral Commission. 

Postal voting

You must be registered to vote to apply for a postal vote. You can apply on-line for a postal vote at www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote 

Applicants for postal votes will be required to provide their National Insurance Number (NINO) or a reason it cannot be provided as part of their application. Download a paper application to vote by post

Postal votes are sent out around two weeks before polling day. They will be sent via first class post. You can apply for a proxy vote instead if you are worried that you may not have time to receive and return your postal vote.

Proxy voting

Proxy voting enables someone else, who is also a registered voter, to vote on your behalf. They must be registered to vote and eligible to vote in the type of election you appoint them for. A person may only act as proxy for a total of four voters only two of whom can be UK based voters. They will need to vote at your polling station or apply to cast your vote by post.

If you are registered to vote then you can apply on-line for a proxy vote at www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote 

Applicants for proxy votes will be required to provide their National Insurance Number (NINO) or a reason it cannot be provided as part of their application.

You may apply for a proxy vote for a particular election or for a permanent proxy vote. If you would like to have a proxy vote permanently you will need to provide a reason and supporting evidence. Download a paper application to vote by proxy
