Lessons in IT and English for Gurkha veterans in Ashford

Lessons in English and IT have been successfully delivered to members of the Nepalese community at a two week event in Ashford, organised by the Project Management Team of Gorkha Zilla Gurung Samaj UK (GZGS UK).

On the first day of the programme, the participants and the instructors gathered in the Buddhist Community Centre in Ashford.  Also present were the GZGS UK Chair, Mr Gautam Gurung, and his committee members to witness the start of this project. The Founder Chair, Lieutenant (Retd) Tham Parsad Gurung, spoke about the project and its aim and encouraged everyone to gain as much advantage as possible from this opportunity.

General Secretary Captain (Retd) Sher Bahadur Gurung briefed the participants on the project and then handed over to the instructors. The participants were taught practical conversational English, both written and oral including basic lessons on IT.  A total of 30 veterans, spouses and widows attended the classes. English instructor Mrs Sujata Gurung, and IT instructors Mr Shamir Gurung and Mr Sonam Gurung delivered basic lessons.

The project was made possible when GZGS UK secured funding from the Veterans’ Foundation UK. The project has been divided into three phases to deliver the programme in Kent, London and Hampshire.  At the end of the project, organisers have high hopes that the participants will see improvements in their confidence, upskill their English language and be able to interact with the general community more in their respective areas.
