Veterans in Ashford
Ashford Borough Council is committed to recognising and supporting veterans living in our borough. Veterans are a valued part of our community, bringing skills, experience and a strong sense of service that continue to benefit Ashford long after military life has ended.
This page provides information on who veterans are, some of the common challenges people may face when leaving the Armed Forces, and where to find local support.
Who is a veteran?
A veteran is anyone who has served at least one day in the regular or reserve Armed Forces. This includes people who served many years ago, those who left recently, and anyone who served in:
- The Royal Navy or Royal Marines
- The British Army
- The Royal Air Force
- Regular or Reserve forces
You do not need to have served in combat, completed a minimum length of service, or be receiving a pension to be considered a veteran.
Not everyone identifies as a veteran
Many people who have served in the Armed Forces do not think of themselves as veterans, particularly if they:
- Left service some time ago
- Served for a short period
- Moved directly into civilian work
- Do not feel their service was ‘significant enough’
If you have served in the UK Armed Forces, you are a veteran, and you may be entitled to support and priority access to services.
Common issues when leaving the Armed Forces
Transitioning to civilian life is different for everyone. While many veterans settle successfully, others may experience challenges at different stages, including:
- Adjusting to civilian employment or training
- Finding suitable housing or understanding housing options
- Mental health or wellbeing concerns, including feeling isolated
- Navigating health services after leaving service
- Managing finances or benefits
- Rebuilding support networks outside the Armed Forces
Support is available locally and nationally to help veterans at any stage after service – not just immediately when leaving.
