Representatives from Ashford have returned from a Civic Twinning visit to Bad Münstereifel, Germany, helping to strengthen the longstanding relationship between the twin towns. The visit also brought together representatives from Fougères, France, Ashford’s other twin town.
Led by the Mayor of Ashford, Cllr Winston Michael, the delegation joined civic representatives, members of the Ashford Twinning Association and young people for a programme of cultural, educational and commemorative activities. Highlights included visits to local heritage sites, meetings with young people, an official civic ceremony and discussions on the future of the partnership.
The theme of this year’s visit, Tradition and Modernity, highlighted the importance of celebrating shared heritage whilst looking to the future. A key focus was the involvement of young people, helping ensure the partnership continues to flourish for generations to come.
The Mayor of Ashford, Cllr Winston Michael, said: “The greatest achievement of our twinning partnership is not the civic ceremonies or formal agreements, but the friendships that have been built across borders and generations.
“The links between Ashford, Bad Münstereifel and Fougères continue to demonstrate how communities from different countries and cultures can come together in friendship, understanding and mutual respect.”
“It was particularly encouraging to see so many young people involved in this year’sprogramme, helping to ensure these relationships remain strong long into the future.”
The visit showcased the continued value of twinning in bringing people together, encouraging cultural understanding and creating opportunities for future generations to build international connections.
Ashford’s Twinning Association continues to support exchanges and activities between the three towns. Residents interested in getting involved can find out more and join the Association by visiting the Ashford Twinning Association website.
