Ashford Borough Council is taking part in The Great Big Green Week
Published: 03/08/2023Ashford Borough Council is again taking part in The Great Big Green Week, a national celebration of community activities to tackle climate change and protect nature.
This year’s The Great Big Green Week is taking place Saturday 10 June – Sunday 18 June 2023.
Ashford’s main event ‘Great Big Green Week Roadshow’ will be taking place in Ashford Town Centre on Saturday 10 June 2023, 10 am – 4pm. The theme this year is repair, reuse and recycle – there is no such thing as waste!
Market stalls will be offering a range of information and ideas to help you make more sustainable choices in your life, with experts available to discuss topics such as energy efficiency, saving water, recycling and biodiversity.
You will also be able to come along and recycle all the old cables that you have lying around the house, as well as kettles, toasters and other small electrical items, or better yet if they are still in good working order you will be able to donate them to Pilgrims Hospices.
If you’re looking to have a much loved item repaired, then the Repair Café Ashford will also be on hand. From small electrical items to furniture, clocks to clothing, the team alongside Sewing Circle will be in Park Mall and will work their best to restore your items. So if you have a dress lying around in need of a new zip or a toaster with a minor fault, this is your chance to bring it in and see if it can be repaired.
Made in Ashford will be running one of their ever growing Craft Pre Loved sales, along with workshops to upcycle clothing and family friendly activities.
The Junk Yard Orchestra will be taking over the bandstand, where you can come along to listen and make music with ad hoc jamming sessions and instrument making workshops for the family; and there will also be live music in Park Mall courtesy of Revelation Ashford.
Also taking place during the week with be the popular Eat Well Spend Less Roadshow, on Wednesday 14 June in Park Mall, with a focus on reducing food waste in your home -saving you money, time and helping the environment.
Become a wildlife scientist for the day and take part in a family friendly Bio Blitz at Conningbrook Lakes on Sunday 18 June. Run by Kent Wildlife Trust, discover what mini beats call the area home and enjoy nature inspired activities. This will be bookable through the Kent Wildlife Trust website.
Sophie Stiles, Climate Change Manager for Ashford Borough Council said: “We are excited to again bring Great Big Green Week activities to Ashford, with great support from our local businesses getting involved.
“We have some great stalls, workshops, and projects going on. Climate change is often seen as too big to fathom and unachievable for the individual, but it is our collective response and enthusiasm that can drive change.
“Event’s like these highlight where and how we can make a difference, from our actions to our purchases and we hope to see you come along.”
