Cattle returning to Ashford Warren
Published: 04/07/2025
The Kent Wildlife Trust has announced that the Ashford team of Dexter cattle will be on site at the Ashford Warren from 1 July to 11 August.
Each year, the Kent Wildlife Trusts uses a small herd of cattle to munch down the vegetation, push back the bramble and keep the clearings open and the cattle in question have become much beloved by residents.
The reason cattle are used is because they are much more natural than strimmers and chainsaws, while also providing other benefits for wildlife.
These benefits include opportunities for seed germination thanks to hoof prints and how seeds can be transported around the site by sticking to the coats and bellies of the cattle.
In total, there are five members of the herd and they are all female. They all have horns, which leads people to believe they’re male, but that isn’t the case!
The Kent Wildlife Trust would like to ask residents to keep all dogs on a lead if they’re walking them around the Ashford Warren, while also not feeding the cattle under any circumstance.
The cattle will be on the east side of the Ashford Warren until 22 July, then they’ll move over to the west side.
