Ashford Borough Council are delighted to announce that Dwell, the latest piece of public art at Conningbrook Lakes, was launched on Wednesday 24 September.
Artist and sculptor, Tim Norris has created a multi-functional artwork which serves as a beautiful bird hide, as well as a sculptural landmark designed for observation, contemplation, and engagement with the natural environment.
Located on the bank of the Eco Lake, facing the nature reserve, the bird hide has been inspired by nature, egg like in form, with hand cut cedar shingles.
As Tim said: “In my practice, I’m drawn using to natural materials and finding a palette of materials that resonates with the area that my sculpture will be located. The Eco Lake provided a natural space in the park, a contemplative space where I encourage people to sit quietly and feel like they are part of nature.”
Dwell is the latest work commissioned by Ashford Borough Council, in collaboration with Chartway Partnerships and Latimer Developments, FrancisKnight public art consultancy, and the local community, and is part of the Public Art Strategy which was developed in 2017. The initiative aims to establish Conningbrook Lakes as a unique and engaging destination for residents and visitors through the integration of art.
The artworks aims to facilitate connections between people and the place and works in collaboration with organisations such as Kent Wildlife Trust, which manages the site and coordinates activities. It encourages both residents and visitors to interact with the landscape in various ways. More artwork will be added to the lakes in the future.
Cllr Simon Betty, Portfolio Holder for Commercial Property and Investment from Ashford Borough Council said: “The Public Art Strategy’s aim was to integrate high-quality design into nature, with the commissioned artworks encouraging observation, contemplation, exploration, and interaction – Tim Norris’ Dwell does just that. The council is proud to support a project that both values artists' contributions in shaping spaces and highlights the importance of nature and its positive impact on wellbeing. It was a pleasure to see this new artwork unveiled yesterday, and I hope that our residents and visitors will enjoy it for years to come.”
Ian Rickards, Area Manager from Kent Wildlife Trust said: "Dwell is a truly inspiring addition to Conningbrook Lakes. It combines the beauty of art with the tranquillity of nature, creating a space where people can slow down and experience wildlife in a new way. As the charity entrusted to manage Conningbrook Lakes Country Park on behalf of Ashford Borough Council, we’re delighted to see how this unique bird hide will help more people connect with the natural world.”
Louise Francis and Laura Knight, FrancisKnight public art consultancy said: “Tim has created an outstanding artwork that responds and reflects the site and surroundings of Conningbrook Lakes. From the very start of the commission Tim was drawn to the Eco Lake, to the stillness and the beauty of the location and was mindful to create an artwork that would be immersed in nature. As visitors and residents enjoy a stroll or run around the Country Park, they may stumble across Dwell at the water’s edge. Tim’s craftsmanship and attention to detail as an artist has created an artwork that should both surprise and delight the viewer.”
