Rural Rate Relief

Help has been available for certain village shops and post offices since 1998. To qualify for relief, your shop must be within a defined settlement in a designated rural area and this settlement must have a population of fewer than 3,000 people.

You can view plans that show the boundaries of the defined settlements. Village general stores, food shops or post offices with a rateable value of up to £8,500 will be eligible for 50% relief, if they are the only business of that type in their settlement. These businesses can then apply for further relief on the remaining 50% of their bill.

Sole village pubs or petrol filling stations with a rateable value of up to £12,500 can also qualify for 50% relief.

Other businesses in these rural areas with rateable values up to £16,500 can also apply for relief. In these cases, we have the final say on whether or not to award the relief.

The 2016 Autumn Statement confirmed the doubling of rural rate relief from 50% to 100% from 1 April 2017. Whilst this is confirmed in legislation, we have used our local discount powers to still give 100% rural rate relief to eligible rate payers from 1 April 2017.
