Our Strategy
Our Climate Framework
Local Authorities have an important and dynamic role tackling the web of interconnected challenges presented by climate change. Ranging from protecting our residents and environment from the physical impacts of extreme weather to reducing carbon emissions and supporting those in fuel poverty. Ashford Borough Council recognises the need to think globally but act locally with a sense of urgency, priority and scale.
It is recognition of the breadth of the task that we are framing our climate activity in three distinct but overlapping strategies, so that we can ensure each area receives the depth of attention, expertise and governance it requires.
These are

The Ashford Energy Strategy
The first of these three strategies - Our Energy Strategy 20024-26 has been completed and can be read in full here.
Empowering Our Community for a Sustainable Future
Local authorities like ours are stepping up, taking an active role in designing and delivering the energy solutions of tomorrow. Ashford is steering the transition to a greener, more sustainable future working on new green infrastructure but also directly supporting residents.
Our Commitment to Net Zero
We remain dedicated to achieving net zero emissions by 2030 within our own operations and by 2050 across the Borough. Our updated Energy Strategy highlights the practical ways we intend to make a difference today as well as the future. By making the connection between climate action with real community benefits, addressing health inequalities and easing the cost of living we hope to inspire even greater engagement from residents and extend our reach. Our proactive approach includes:-
- Decarbonising our own buildings and services, exploring innovation and best practice, generating savings and cutting carbon
- Supporting increased generation of renewable energy with rooftop solar schemes and heat networks
- Supporting communities with the tools they need, such as community energy projects, home improvement grants and loans
- Setting up partnership to widen influence, community benefit and build a thriving green economy
- Commitment to continuously learn and explore different approaches
Sustainability and fairness are at the heart of Ashford’s energy journey. Together, we’re not just reducing carbon—we’re creating a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

Our Adaptation and Landsacpe/biodiversity strategy will follow in 2026.
