Have your say on Local Government Reorganisation
Published: 07/10/2025
As you may have seen, Government ministers want councils in Kent and Medway to deliver the services they provide in a different way.
In the biggest shake up of local government in almost 50 years, they want to abolish existing councils and create a number of new unitary councils serving roughly 500,000 people each.
For those unaware, a unitary council delivers all council services for one area. An example of this is Medway Council, which is a unitary council.
This process is known as Local Government Reorganisation (LGR).
To give an idea of scale, the 12 current district councils in Kent deliver services to an average of 134,000 people each. Again, using Medway Council as an example, they support a population of 283,000 people.
Ministers think the changes will make it simpler for residents to understand how things work and the new councils will be more efficient.
As part of this consultation, residents are invited to have their say by way of a brief survey.
The survey covers things such as your personal preferences when it comes to the council, any opportunities or concerns you may have with LGR and the chance to have your say and opinion on the matter.
Your say is important, so we advise our residents to complete the survey, which is hosted on the dedicated Change is Coming website.
To find out more about LGR, we have a page on our website explaining what we know so far.
